I am proud of the County's recent accomplishments and my contribution to the Board's effort.

Specific recent accomplishments include:

Passage of two major bond referenda in 2003 and 2007 for the Durham Public Schools, Durham Technical Community College, Durham Public Library, and the Museum of Life and Science

Adopted the first Greenhouse Gas Action plan in the state

Preserved over 1000 acres of open space protecting our drinking water quality including the New Hope Creek Preserve, a joint effort with three other local governments and two nonprofit groups

Established a community-wide results based accountability (RBA) initiative with an annual report card and strategic action plans

Expanded System of Care to serve over a thousand at risk youth and received a number of state and national awards

Received LEED certification for the new Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant, the East Branch Library, and the North Branch Library due to our commitment to high performance design in building construction

Promoted strong economic development capped by the Merck and Quintiles expansions

Worked with Duke Health System to develop a crisis access center and future City of Medicine Academy on the Durham Regional campus

Updated the Comprehensive Plan and the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) which realigned and strengthened ordinances governing growth and development

Constructed new Senior Center and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) facility

Preserved a strong fiscal position and our Triple A bond rating due to conservative budgeting and financial management

Worked with the School Board to reduce the dropout and suspension rates and close the achievement gap
